History of Guatemala

Background: Guatemala was freed of Spanish colonial rule in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had led to the death of more than 100,000 people and had created some 1 million refugees
U.N.: Guatemala's Indians, rural poor kept at subsistence levelsOctober 12, 2000  Web posted at: 6:54 PM EDT (2254 GMT)
                  QUETZALTENANGO, Guatemala (AP)
-- Almost 60 percent of Guatemalans
take home less than $2 a day because
most of the country's rural population
and Indians are excluded from jobs that
would allow them to earn more,
according to a U.N. study released to
the public Thursday.  The 312-page report, compiled by a
                  conglomerate of 16 United
                  Nations-affiliated organizations, found
that Guatemalans living outside the city
and those of Indian descent are blocked from economic and social opportunities
                  at strikingly similar rates.
